Photography Workshop Testimonials

Hi Ian,

Thanks so much for the beginner's photography workshop in beautiful Bristol. I can't believe how much I learned in just 3 hours, from becoming familiar with the settings on my camera to taking lovely (for me) images instead of random snaps. Your flexible approach and encouragement made me try all sorts of pictures and to experiment with the settings, light and shade, subject matter and perspective. I really enjoyed our amble around Clifton looking at things in new ways and taking photos from a different perspective, this has made the biggest difference.

I've found myself popping the camera into my bag and practising my new skills, and I'm even entering my village photography competition next month! Your enthusiasm for photography is infectious and I couldn't have found a better teacher.

Thanks again,
Helen

Testimonial from my Beginners photography workshop in Bristol.

"Today the 18th February 2017 I have just got back from a Beginners Introduction Course with Ian Wade. I am a beginner and wanted to progress from only using auto mode. We started at 07.00 in order to catch some dawn lighting. We went to various locations and the tuition was superb and built up in stages.

Nothing was too much trouble to explain and I now feel confident enough to leave automatic mode and experiment with manual settings. Creating different effects using white balance and blurred foreground and backgrounds was covered.

Ian is very patient, has lots of tips and ticks and his enthusiasm certainly rubbed off on me. He is very pleasant and easy to get on with too.I would certainly recommend this course. I really enjoyed it. Many thanks, Ian."

Regards David

Testimonial from my Beginners photography workshop in Bristol.

"You have my son to thank for choosing you. He said you sounded “user-friendly” and he was right, you were personable, clear with your instructions, and patient with my lack of knowledge and competence. I have a much better understanding now, not only of the terms, AV, TV, ISO but also of my camera and it controls. The time I spent with you went so quickly. It has inspired me to practise taking photographs much more often than I do and to turn the dial away from “auto”. Thank you also for offering future contact for any photographic issues or questions I may have. It is good to know that I have that backup. I am just sitting at the computer now ready to download my photographs from yesterday and appraise them with a critical eye. They will always remind me of a hot morning in Bristol.

Chris was parked just down the road and he had bought me a lovely notebook to record notes and things pertaining to my new photography journey. I hope you got some good photographs on your return to the park"

With all best wishes.

Helen

I was originally booked in to do this workshop in March but because of Covid, we postponed. It ended up being an excellent early morning on Shapwick Heath with great weather and a wide variety of little creatures to photograph. I’ve been taking a range of photos for years but have lacked a clear direction of what I’m passionate about photographing. After three hours with Ian that flew by, I really enjoyed playing with my camera again. It gave me a new way to look at my photography and inspired me to be more interested in macro photography. Off the back of this workshop I spent considerable time hunting for a macro lens to continue with what I picked up during the day.

Ian is a really relaxed photographer who is focussed on capturing a shot rather than spending considerable time on technical jargon and settings - which I really appreciated. Photography can sometimes be over complicated by the endless chat about settings when really, what matters, is if you capture an image you’re happy with. I caught loads of images I’m really pleased with and Ian’s workshop has opened up my mind to new approaches to my own photography.

I would definitely book another session with Ian.

My birthday present was a workshop with Ian Wade on the Somerset levels. Our early morning start combined Composition photography of cobwebs in the dawn mist to damsel flies and dragonflies in the warm sunshine. My 3 hour session drifted over towards nearer 4 as Ian directed and coaxed me into honing my very basic knowledge of bird photography. I will arrange a second session with a more advanced camera set up (With Ian’s guidance) to take advantage of Ian’s patience and obvious enthusiasm in wildlife photography. What a great idea for a birthday present. Thank you Ian.

Walking round a Somerset Levels nature reserve with Ian for a wildlife photography workshop was a joy as he notices everything and looks at it with an eye for that different, special picture. He instinctively knows what will help you most to improve your images and does not burden you with too much technical detail if you cannot absorb it. Instead, he gives really helpful tips and makes you look at things anew so you can take something in whatever conditions you are facing with your camera. I learned so much from the workshop and cannot wait to put my new found knowledge into practice.

Thank you for your time on Saturday.

I found the 2 1/2 hours a real learning experience. It was liberating to be given the confidence to switch off all the automatic support features of the camera and go back to doing everything manually, to take back control.

In particular I found the difference in colour tones through adjusting the white balance a revalation. I had no idea what my camera was doing on "auto" to play safe (bland!) until you had me switch it off and select alternatives for the changing light.

I found your ideas on composition and getting different angles so helpful in getting more eye-catching images. I see now how you can make use of patterns of light and colour in both background and foreground to create interest without diverting the eye from the subject of the picture in sharp focus in the middle ground.

So thank you for your ideas which I shall now go away and try to put into practice.

Mark

When I bought a good digital mirrorless camera with a zoom lens a month ago – I didn’t really have a clue which of the hundreds of settings were the key ones to use, never mind take a decent picture with realistic colour and light. After just a 3 hour workshop with I understand much more about my camera and feel infinitely more confident in changing the setup to suit the situation. He showed me how to immediately improve my photos by changing one setting and he taught me some brilliant techniques that I have been practising since. I loved the workshop, as well as being very helpful, it was really good fun and I didn’t feel out of my depth with technical details. I am now taking photos daily and loving it.
